(More customer reviews)Just got this today. First thing I did was test for accuracy. Simple test, place unit on level surface and shoot a beam to a wall 100' feet away. Mark the center of the beam and rotate the unit 180 degrees and see where that mark ends up. It was exactly 5/8" out between the two marks which means the unit is off by 5/16" at 100'. That's really not bad but they spec it at 1/8" at 100' and that's what I was expecting to see.
Second problem is that at 100' indoors under normal office lighting I could see the right beam and center beam dot at 100' very clearly but the left beam was very dim in comparison.
At 100' the beam dot is elongated and measures 3/4" x 1/2", it's still easy to find the center of the beam though.
I did some basic tests for checking square and that seemed fine.
Before I bought the tool I knew about the side beams being 1" offset from the plumb beam and I was ok with that as long as it was accurate as per the specs. But the unit is out of spec by a factor of 1.5 (1/8" claimed versus 5/16"actual).
If 5/16" at 100' is ok for you then this is probably still a good tool and maybe that does not matter for most foundations. The left beam being so dim could be just a result of splitting the beams by a prism?
With the dot being so big I was concerned that the detector would not be able to accurately gauge the height. But there was no problem with that, the detector worked perfectly even with the large dot.
Just for fun I compared this tool with my Robotoolz 5 beam laser and the Robotoolz was 4" off at 100'! I also compared it to my Dewalt Self leveling rotary Laser, that laser is accurate to 1/8" at 100' according to my same testing method.
I'm guessing I'm going to return this laser...need to give it some thought, maybe I can have it calibrated but I'm not crazy about having to send something for calibration that I just took out of the box.
