(More customer reviews)I purchased this lockset because I purchased a new home and knew that cleaning ladies, maintenance people, etc. all had a key to the previous lock. The SmartKey feature attracted me because I would not have to hire a locksmith to rekey the lock, or add locks later that allowed the same key to be used.
Installation wasn't too difficult. This was my first lock install and it took a little less than one hour. The holes and cutouts already existed from the previous lock, so that made it much simpler. The directions aren't extremely clear. However I am an engineer (i.e. mechanically inclined) so I was able to figure out steps that weren't entirely clear.
One thing missing from the internet (through all my searches) was comments by someone who installed this type of lock on a left-hand door. So I took a shot and I installed it on the left hand door leading into my garage. The deadbolt was a breeze, no problems whatsoever. However, the door handle was a little different. The lock is installed "upside down" and the handles are switched. It doesn't affect the function at all. You just put the key in (what I consider) upside down. When rekeying it you'll have to keep in mind that it is upside down.
The locks feel sturdy and well made. Visually they seem to be a slight improvement over the previous set. I have two doors that needed new locks, so I bought only one to see if it installed and worked OK before I purchased the other. I've just ordered the second set.
If I have any trouble with rekeying I will post an update. Otherwise you can assume all is well.
I give it four stars because the directions are poor with half sentence descriptions of each step. If you're mechanically inclined it should be a breeze.
UPDATE: Rekeying worked perfectly. Some people have posted complaints online about the lock failing (i.e. no longer accepts your key). I haven't had that issue. The rekeying directions weren't clear, but I figured out the process. Step 3a says "INSERT KEY FULLY DO NOT ROTATE." Step 3b then directs you to rotate a 1/4 turn. Their directions can be viewed on the kwikset website. Nonetheless it worked as advertised.
