(More customer reviews)I purchased the Arlington handleset with the Smart Key single cylinder for a new house. Two days later, the key refused to work in the cylinder as I was attempting to lock the front door to leave. I returned the set to the store and exchanged for an identical handleset, only to have that one fail 3 days later, this time when trying to open the door upon my return. I never even used the Smart Key feature on the original cylinder, and after exchanging I successfully rekeyed the doorknob on the garage entry door to match the new deadbolt's key (rather than rekeying the front door deadbolt, lest I give it a reason to fail as the original did, which it ended up doing anyway).
Now I'm either stuck with the handle because of it's larger-than-average distance (11") between the standard hardware hole and the smaller hole I drilled to secure the base of the handle in my metal door (the deadbolt would go in the trash), or filling in the base hole, sanding, and repainting my door. In the box there is a card with a number urging you to call their support line before returning the product. The number doesn't even go to Kwikset, it goes to another Black and Decker subsidiary called Price Pfister which makes plumbing fixtures. Searching the box yielded another (correct) number, which simply stated that due to high call volume all representatives were busy and asked that I call again before hanging up.
In researching my problem I learned that Kwikset products are not known for their resistance to picking, even with all the badging and labeling on the boxes to the contrary. I also found that I am not alone in having a Smart Key deadbolt fail in the manner for no discernible reason, though I am lucky in that it did not lock me out of my home and require a visit from a locksmith. In the future I will absolutely avoid any Kwikset product. I would recommend that you do the same.
