I found the Doorman to be a good product at a good price.I put one on the front door because our dogs escape if we forget to close the door. It is held in place with some hefty #14 screws, so you definitely want to drill pilot holes and use a power screwdriver. It has all the fittings I needed to install it for left and right, inward and outward opening doors. If you have a hollow steel door, you might want to put the heavy part on the door frame and the small arm high on the door itself so the screws bite into the wood strip inside the metal door. I "got away" with mounting the piston on the steel door and the small arm on the frame.
After it was attached I tuned the closing speeds so it would latch well. It has 3 settings like some other closers, "sweep" speed for most of the door closing, "Latch" speed for about the last 10 degrees of closing, and "spring force". I set the sweep to be fairly slow and set a fast latch speed so it would slam shut and latch. The spring did not need to be set, but I fiddled with it anyway. I found a strong spring made it hard to open and did not really help to latch it, so I set the spring force back to the original place. The major effect was the latch speed. Set it slow, and the door never latches. Set a fast latch, and it locks nicely without slamming your hand or foot.
One caution, and I think this goes for any door closer - you must ensure the door closes without binding for the closer to latch the door all the way. I shaved the wooden frame around the steel door and set the striker plate very clean so the door closes very easily. Eh, it needed to be done anyway.
I will order more Doormans for the back and garage entrances.
