Okay, I'm from Brooklyn, and I live in an apartment. We have a very secure front door to our building, except no one ever closes it, and the knob and deadbolt they put in the apartments is... pathetic. Seriously, I hear a "sad trombone" sound effect every time I unlock it, and I want to kick sand in its face. This does not jive with my "two good locks on everything" policy.
Obviously, being in an apartment building, there are a lot of things I can't do. Things like...
-put in a new deadbolt!
-drill holes in the door/add another deadbolt
-install a security system
And considering how pathetic the deadbolt is, I wasn't going to install a chain lock or barrel bolt, at least on the front door. So it seemed like I was basically screwed--there was no middle ground, it seemed, for something that was more secure than a chain lock but that didn't involve getting on my super's nerves. Fortunately, after many rounds of googling, I found this handy little item. It's marketed as something to keep your kids from wandering out of the house, but it also works quite handily as a deadbolt alternative for us paranoid grownups.
First of all, it's heavier than you'd think, which gives me confidence. If you couldn't be bothered to install it, you could just keep it near the door and clock people with it if they tried to break in. Second, it comes with REAL SCREWS. One of my pet peeves with security hardware is they'll give you a fancy device and 1/2" screws to mount it with. Seriously? Sure, the bolt might be secure, but the door itself sure isn't. I'm pretty sure my 15-pound Jack Russell could break through a door that's secured with the same size screws as I used to fix the top rail on my air conditioner. It also feels really satisfying to secure--it's kinda like the pop-tops they use on Rubbermaid bins--you know, the latches you use to keep your dog from getting into things? You can see the pressure involved in securing the door, and it's clearly not going anywhere.
The only thing I wish is that the instructions came with more pictures. I have really horrible spatial intelligence, and trying to figure out how this thing worked and not install it backwards or something was a bit of a test of will. The good news is, if you google, you can find videos of it that help this a lot.
All in all, I couldn't be more pleased. May actually get some more of these for some of the internal doors, just because it's a good replacement for a latch but slightly better-looking!
